How To Build a Deck

Summer is here and it would be great if you could build a vacation getaway in your own backward. You can get a simple start on improving your yard by installing a deck. Here are the steps to building one.

Planning Stages

Before you start construction, you need to decide what you want and where you want it to be. You will want to weigh out what type of wood, if you want adjustable deck supports, and what size you want it to be. You can talk to a contractor or a specialist at your local lumberyard for assistance in drawing up a blueprint of your deck. You will also want to apply for a building permit before you break ground and contact your utility companies so they can mark gas and power lines.

Pre-building Steps

Once you have a plan, you will want to prepare. You will need to install plates to your house to attach the deck. You will also need to dig the holes for the footings and pour concrete to keep them secure. At this point, you can set up the hardware for the posts in the concrete to make things easier.

Frame It Out

Once the footings are dry and the hardware is secure, you can begin building the frame of the deck. You will attach the joists to the beams according to the blueprints you put together. When that is completed, you will lay down the sheets on the frame to complete the preliminary deck.

Finishing Up

Now that the basic deck is done, you can add the features that will make your deck unique. If you want access to your yard you can build steps and attach them. You can install railings around the base for safety and customize them to your tastes. Finally you will want to stain the wood to protect it from the weather.
